Doha, September 2012: ORYX GTL, Qatar's pioneering ultra-clean fuels manufacturer, has confirmed its status as one of the world's safest, most sustainable and responsible energy companies by setting two new world-class safety benchmarks.
On 27 August, the company achieved a Zero Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), one of the greatest achievements in ORYX GTL's to date. This was followed on 12 September with the milestone of 10 million man-hours without any lost work days.
Zero TRIR is the culmination of a continuous improvement in safety performance at the company, spearheaded by its 'Road to Zero Harm' campaign, which was launched in December 2009.
Under the 'Road to Zero Harm' campaign ORYX GTL invests exhaustive hours in training, coaching and working with both employees and contractors to ensure safer working practices and working environments to help embed its safety culture and philosophy that "Safety is our way of life." This is part of an organisation-wide, zero-compromise approach to safety. The Road to Zero Harm is a formal system integrated into every aspect of the business, helping define and use best practices to manage safety and health issues.
TRIR is a key safety metric which measures the rate of recordable workplace injuries per 100 workers, per year. In this case, recordable cases refer to occupational death, non-fatal occupational illness, and non-fatal occupational injuries. Annually defined objectives and targets drive leading indicators which in turn are implemented in the Road to Zero Harm campaign, and have driven the company to consistently achieve new heights of safety excellence. The results reflect ORYX GTL's 'best-in-class' vision, 'best-in-class performance' targets and the implementation of 'best-in-class' systems.
ORYX GTL CEO Abdulrahman M Al-Suwaidi said: "For years, the whole ORYX GTL family has worked very hard with our eyes on a set target: No injuries to our people, which contributed to a TRIR of 0.0, an exceptional achievement that few companies in the oil and gas industry worldwide have accomplished. "This great distinction is just reward for all our efforts to date, driven by an organisation-wide desire to integrate safety best practices into our corporate way of life in the long-term.
"Because of the critical importance ORYX GTL attributes to safety issues, it is much more than merely a corporate priority, which can change over time – rather, it is now embedded in the psyche of our people, incorporated into their day-to-day working life.
"ORYX GTL family deserves great congratulations; we have accomplished what many only dream of and we have done it with our contractors by our side through as part of the ORYX GTL family."
With Zero TRIR, ORYX GTL becomes the second oil and gas operator in Qatar to achieve this outstanding safety milestone. However, this milestone is just the beginning, and the company is now committed to going 'Beyond Zero' and further fine tuning our practices and policies to sustain safe way of life we have established, and therefore achieve many more years without harm to our people, our plant and the environment.
By maintaining long-term Operational Excellence in a Zero Harm manner, ORYX GTL is confirming that safety is no longer a priority, but a WAY OF LIFE.
